2020 is almost here and I'm so excited for #2020yearofthereread and all of the new books that are coming out. Here is my reading plan for January. Click on the titles to see them on GoodReads.
New Titles
Thoughts: I just reread The Hazel Wood and I'm so ready to get back to Alice because I forgot was a deliciously dark fairy-tale type story this is. And I'm hoping for a slow burn Finch romance.

Thoughts: Well, this is one compared to my favorite high-fantasy authors ... honestly I don't really "know" much about it, but I'm hoping it is good by association. Plus, it is a Monte Cristo retelling which I'm excited about

Thoughts: Okay, it says it is about Bolivian politics and that was all I needed to know. I love a book that seeks out fresh ground.
Summary: Ximena is the decoy Condesa, a stand-in for the last remaining Illustrian royal. Her people lost everything when the usurper, Atoc, used an ancient relic to summon ghosts and drive the Illustrians from La Ciudad. Now Ximena’s motivated by her insatiable thirst for revenge, and her rare ability to spin thread from moonlight.
When Atoc demands the real Condesa’s hand in marriage, it’s Ximena’s duty to go in her stead. She relishes the chance, as Illustrian spies have reported that Atoc’s no longer carrying his deadly relic. If Ximena can find it, she can return the true aristócrata to their rightful place.
She hunts for the relic, using her weaving ability to hide messages in tapestries for the resistance. But when a masked vigilante, a warm-hearted princess, and a thoughtful healer challenge Ximena, her mission becomes more complicated. Thoughts: I don't know if I meant to read historical horror, but it is based on the real life of the Countess Dracula and that sounds pretty awesome.
Summary: In 17th century Hungary, Anna Darvulia has just begun working as a scullery maid for the young and glamorous Countess Elizabeth Báthory. When Elizabeth takes a liking to Anna, she’s vaulted to the dream role of chambermaid, a far cry from the filthy servants’ quarters below. It’s not long before Anna falls completely under the Countess’s spell—and the Countess takes full advantage. Thoughts: It's described as "genre bending" YA fantasy. Which piqued my interest.
Summary: In Kyrkarta, magic—known as maz—was once a freely available natural resource. Then an earthquake released a magical plague, killing thousands and opening the door for a greedy corporation to make maz a commodity that’s tightly controlled—and, of course, outrageously expensive.
Which is why Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever.
But when their plan turns up a powerful new strain of maz that (literally) blows up in their faces, they’re driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague—and possibly save the world.

Thoughts: One of my favorite books of all time with one of my favorite complicated characters (Mr. Dirty-hands himself). I just reread The Grisha Trilogy and am continuing into the Grishaverse with this duo. Plus the show is coming out on Netflix soon and I want the books fresh in my mind before the show changes things.
Summary: Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price—and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone. . . .

Thoughts: Well, I have to read them back to back. That's the pleasure of rereading, you get to enjoy the series all together.
Summary: Welcome to the world of the Grisha.

Thoughts: This book wasn't everything I had hoped for during my first read, I'm hoping this reread reminds me of why I love Nikolai.

Thoughts: Oh these books. I'm SO READY to reread these books. I have my hardbacks waiting for annotation. On this reread I'm specifically thinking about who the characters were BEFORE the books started.
Summary: It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.
For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.
Thoughts: Oh, this is my actual favorite in this series. The amount of character development we get for Ronan makes him to REAL.
Summary: Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after.
