Book Review: The Heart Forger

The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Oh Tea, oh dear Miss Tea.

Well, let's quickly cover what I liked about this book. It continues a story I'm really enjoying in a world that I like. I like some of the new characters added in this story, and the ones that are fleshed out even more. I'm definitely a "character" reader and I really do enjoy how Chupeco shapes her characters.

However, the "glimpse into the future" chapters. Those I hated. Seriously. HATED. I like a story that I can follow the arch, that maybe surprises me sometimes, that takes you along with it. This story already lacks a driving plot (meaning the plot is slow and sometimes there is a lot of description and character building and no plot movement) and these preview chapters really just take what little there is and yank the rug out from under it.

As always, there isn't a lot to review in a second book without giving away a bunch of spoilers for the first title. But I have to say, if you like a chronological plot you aren't going to love this book. If you are plot driven when reading, you aren't going to like this series. But, if you like great characters and are looking for a new fantasy novel, this is a great one to pick up.

Finally, will I read the last book? Probably. I put it on hold at the library. But I don't think I'll buy it.
