Book Review: The Iron Trial

by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare

Tweet Synopsis: Callum has always been told not to go. Callum goes. Callum learns. Callum is amazing. #friendship #adventure

Why Did I Pick It Up:
Because Cassandra Clare co-wrote it ... even though I don't really enjoy Holly Black.

The General - because I didn't finish the book:
I'm sure this book is a great read for it's recommended audience, but I never really "got into it" and, as a result, didn't finish the book. The story line has a great hook, but I honestly felt like Black and Clare took all of the parts of what make them great authors, and watered it down to be a middle grade reader. Which is great for those in 4th-6th grade, but without the more mature themes running through the book, the writing lost its magic.

Who will love this book?
Anyone who isn't ready to read popular YA works like Clare's series or newly minted books to movies will like to pick this up because it is by a well-known author. A co-worker of mine loved it and she loves Holly Black's books, so if you like Black you might really like this one. It has a great overall theme of friendship and magic so readers who like Percy Jackson and Harry Potter might also like this new series.

How much did I like it? 5/10 ...

Will I read more? Probably not, I might try this one again later, but I'm really not all that sure.
