Book Review: The Black Mage: Apprentice

Why Did I Pick It Up: I had read the first after becoming friends with Rachel on GoodReads ... after reading the first you cannot help but read the second.

Genre: Fantasy

Favorite Character: Dorian

Suggested Age Range: Middle and up

Romance: Yes, very much so

The Good: This book begins right where the first one leaves off. The drama is high and the tension is tangible. I'm loving this story, this world everything that Ms. Carter has created.

The situations that were created were fantastic, school challenges, issues with other students, personal issues abound and are handled with care. I would have liked to have gotten to know some of the other characters and their problems a little more, this book is pretty ego centrical, but we would have never covered as much of the story as we did and had more for the secondary characters.

That ending, I'm not going to say anything to give it away (I'm pretty sure I've left a spoiler ridden review on GoodReads you can check out if you'd like). I was preparing and preparing and then definitely not prepared. Amazing. Excellent

The Bad: It is rush, oh so rushed. I felt like time passed and I didn't even realize it was another year. Suddenly three years had passed and I missed it. It might be the formatting of the eBook, but I would have loved to have seen some headers at the beginning of chapters marking the passage of time. Three years is a lot of time to pass in a single book - especially a YA book, I'm not sure I've experienced that before. I needed more direction as a reader to stay on top of things.

The Ugly: I don't have anything UGLY to say, but the problem with the book feeling rushed was made up in how the last several chapters came together.

Who will love this book? Well, if you liked the first one ;) If you like magical schools, strong female characters, crush-worthy book-boyfriends, and tense plots, then you really should try out this series.

How much did I like it? 8/10

Will I read more? Yes, so anxious for book 3

Bingo 2015: None
